Communities in Kabango and Mwita immensely benefitted from the project in many ways

Every year, Malawi, faces myriads of environmental challenges, natural disasters resulting in most of its population facing acute food shortage, internal displacements of communities to higher lands, and limited access to financial assistance among others. Against this background a CART funded a project was implemented in Blantyre District to empower communities to be food secure and build resilience against natural disasters. The project implemented a farming scheme in 5 villages near Blantyre in southern Malawi with a total of just under 400 households.

They’ve introduced an irrigation system and have managed to have 3 harvests this year. This has provided some surplus food for a food bank. Training sessions have been held with the villagers to enhance their awareness of climate-appropriate measures and of child protection issues, so that more children have attended school consistently, rather than working in the fields.

COMPLETION OF BOREHOLE PROJECT

The 149 inhabitants of Gongontol community are now enjoying the simple necessity of life-potable safe water. After over 100 years since the place has been settled, this is the first time they have their own borehole. This will mean no more suffering of walking to the stream and digging in a sump hole where the water is shared with animals, no more water borne diseases that causes severe sickness and absenteeism from school. Children no longer missing school because of the need to fetch water three times a day over distances

The Old Water Source

Women and young girls, walked to the stream to collect unsafe water for their households every day. Over 1,890L of water was collected from morning, afternoon and evening in their heavy loaded “silver basin” (usually 30 liters) to use for domestic purposes. All of these problems are now part of their past as they have their own safe borehole water

The donation of a wheelchair to a deserving young man who has never been to school due to the nature of his disability but with his enthusiastic appearance could do well in class. This young man was identified during a village outreach program to identify vulnerable families due to high fear of hunger crisis in all the areas. It is particularly interesting to read his story, which makes the donation very real and personal to us in the CART team who are so far away. UNITED ACTION FOR CHILDREN, CAMEROON

CHANGES SPARKED BY CHRISTIAN AFRICAN RELIEF TRUST SUPPORT TO INTERNALLY DISPLACED GIRLS TO UNDERGO TRAINING IN CULINARY ARTS IN CAMEROON

Our belief is that by ensuring that young internally displaced and
vulnerable girls living in Buea Municipality are equipped with job
creation/self-employment skills and life skills, they will avail
themselves from exploitation, rape, early marriage, unwanted
pregnancy, early parenthood, prostitution, improve their
competitiveness and become productive adults. The long term
goal is to produce good quality human resources that can help
themselves and others out of poverty

The equipment and other training materials acquired with support from CART have actually facilitated the training and equipping of 30 internally displaced, marginalized and disadvantaged girls with skill for job creation/self-employment and income generation, enabling them to rise out of poverty, reduce youth migration to Europe, America, Canada and social problems, and empower them to become productive members of their communities and eventually improve well-being for themselves and community at large.

Borehole and Relief Trust – Recent Report from Malawi

In Mangochi, the weather is still hot and dry. It is interesting that while we are suffering from the heat, there’s too much rain in the country’s Northern Region, and the water flowing into Lake Malawi has swelled up the lake and Shire River. Many people in low areas are displaced, and property is destroyed. In Mpinganjira Parish, many gardens along the Shire River and around Lake Malombe are submerged in water.

We are at Njereza Skills Centre waiting to complete the rigging of the borehole. We are all excited and looking at the drilling to see if the centre’s potable water is nearby. This will change the Njereza Skills Centre.The efforts of CART volunteers, Trustees and donations are improving, Njereza Skills Centre.

The maize purchased in Zomba will be distributed in two districts of Machinga and Zomba for 50 families. At the same time, the money bought in Mangochi will be distributed to the Mangochi and Balaka families. Altogether, one hundred families can access food relief and treated nets

We are waiting for Treated Nets from Population Services International then the distribution will commence immediately in the four selected venues in our catchment area, four districts in the Eastern Region of Malawi.
