CART’s Tanzania Warm Cots project goes from strength to strength and, thanks to an up-swell in support for this in 2011, there were major advances during 2012. CART received £3,680 specifically for the Warm Cots project and this has now been put to great use: saving lives of desperately ill premature babies. A further 29 Warm Cots have been provided to 11 hospitals and village medical centres. The funds raised also covered the costs of training staff in how to use and maintain the equipment
In summer 2012 CART volunteer and Warm Cots inventor, Jeff Carr again travelled to Tanzania. (As always, covering all his own expenses – the charity never pays for travel for our volunteers in the field.) Jeff oversaw every hospital and health centre in the Moshi area being given Warm Cots and distribution moved into two new areas: Tanga, (a major port in the north) and Dodoma (actually the capital city, although a fraction of the size of Dar-es-Salaam). Here the charity has set up a network of eight hospitals that will receive Warm Cots. There are now cots in the Moshi Area at Mawenzi, Machame, Marangu, Kibosho, Huruma, Kilema, Ngoyoni, Uru, Masama, Rombo Mkuu, Sowetu St Joseph’s and Tanzania Planting (TPU). In the Arusha area Karatu, Tengeru, Nkoaranga and Mkondoroa now have them. We should also thank the dedicated staff in Tanzania who work tirelessly, especially Dr Nicholas Chatto and Sister Rose Kundi. The cost of making, distributing and training used the entire £3,680. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
Following a visit to Tanzania in 2013 by Dr Carr, there are plans in place to expand construction, training and distribution of the cots to the southern region of the country by training students and tutors at a Technical college near the Zambia border area in 2014. Further funding is being sought to keep this amazing life saving project going.
